SM malls in Cebu and Iloilo have won a Silver Award at the International Council of Shopping Centers MAXI Awards for a sustainability campaign that turned plastic waste into public art installations.
The award recognized “Art From All: Turning Community Action into Public Art,” a campaign launched in May 2025 at SM City Cebu and SM City Iloilo. The initiative collected 31,634 plastic items from shoppers and mall communities, which were later repurposed into large-scale eco-art displays.
At SM City Cebu, donated plastic bottles were transformed into “The Gentle Giant,” a whale shark-inspired installation highlighting Cebu’s marine biodiversity. At SM City Iloilo, plastic waste was used to create the “Mangrove Memory Tree,” a life-sized artwork by Ilongga artist Margaux Blas in partnership with Rezbin.
The ICSC MAXI Awards are among the retail industry’s recognized honors for marketing and innovation.
SM Supermalls said the recognition reflects its broader push to integrate sustainability, waste management, plastic reduction and community engagement into mall operations.
The company also received Silver recognition for “The SM Green Movement: Sustaining Communities Through Responsible Design.”
SM said the Art From All campaign will expand across more SM malls in the Visayas, with new artworks set to be unveiled in June 2026 in celebration of World Oceans Day.
