SINGAPORE – Two foreign workers died while three others were injured when fire broke out in their rented apartment at 88 Lorong 6 Geylang Friday morning.

The identities of the fatalities, believed to be foreign workers, have not been disclosed yet. They were declared dead at the scene by responding paramedics.

According to the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), the fire struck a unit on the second level of the four-storey building where the victims were asleep at 4 a.m.

The unit is rented out by the owner, identified as Mrs Bala, for about a year already.

When paramedics arrived at the scene, they found two people lying motionless in one of the rooms. They were rushed out of the unit but were pronounced dead.

Two men were rushed to the Singapore General Hospital due to burn injuries while another one was sent to Tan Tock Seng Hospital due to a sprained right wrist.

The SCDF extinguished the blaze within 30 minutes.

In a statement, the SCDF said the cause of the blaze is still under investigation. It did not disclose the identities of the two foreign workers who perished in the early morning fire.

Sources told the local media that they saw at least 15 men running out of the building when the fire broke out. One of the men even positioned a car right below the window of the burning unit to allow those inside to jump off. – BusinessNewsAsia.com
