What started as a child’s play turned tragic when a six-year-old died after falling from the second floor of a mall in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Friday afternoon.

Authorities said the girl, identified as Nurhayada Sofia Musa, was playing near the escalator of the Kenanga Wholesale City Mall when she accidentally fell from the second floor and into the ground floor.

Dang Wangi Police Chief ACP Zainol Samah said the child died on scene due to severe head injuries. Her body was brought to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital for post-mortem examination.

The six-year-old girl was with her parents coming into the mall but it was still uncertain how she was allegedly able to play at the escalator without her parents knowing it.

An investigation was launched by Samah said police investigators found no signs of foul play based on their initial interview with witnesses.

The mall is endorsed by Tourism Malaysia as a Kuala Lumpur Must Visit Destination

Children playing at or near escalators have always been dangerous, with several incidents around Asia involving kids getting stuck or falling off escalators.

In the Philippines, a baby’s hand got wedged in the bottom of the escalator when he fell out of his stroller at SM Aura Premier in Taguig City.

The incident, which was videotaped and shared on Facebook, occurred on March 29, 2015.

Sources said the stroller was apparently not secured by the mother when they used the escalator, which caused the baby to fall.

Mall administrators have always warned parents from using the escalator when they are towing strollers with their babies.

Witnesses said that the mechanism carried on going for several seconds before somebody had managed to press the stop button and raise the alarm. – BusinessNewsAsia.com
