LEGAZPI CITY, PHILIPPINES – Authorities have ordered the evacuation of families living within the permanent danger zone around Mount Bulusan in Sorsogon as the volcano continues to spew ashes.

The Philippine Insitute of Volcanology and Siesmology (Phivolcs) together with the Sorsogon Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) and Office of Civil Defense (OCD)-Bicol are set to conduct aerial survey of Mt. Bulusan following teh phreatic explosion recorded at 9:46 p.m. on Wednesday.

A phreatic eruption, also called a phreatic explosion or ultravulcanian eruption, occurs when magma heats ground or surface water.

The survey will try to determine the amount of volcanic deposits that have accumulated on Mt. Bulusan, said Sorsogon PDDRMO chief Engr. Raden Dimaano.

The coming in of a typhoon also adds to threat that Mt. Bulusan could explode in the next few days.

Bulusan is generally known for its sudden steam-driven or phreatic explosions. It has erupted 15 times since 1885 and is considered as the 4th most active volcano in the Philippines after Mayon, Taal, and Kanlaon. – BusinessNewsAsia.com
