Former Ilocos Sur Governor and senatorial candidate Luis “Chavit” Singson has vowed to modernize the Philippines’ transport system and support jeepney drivers by introducing affordable electric jeepneys (e-jeepneys).
His flagship project, a state-of-the-art e-jeepney manufacturing plant in Batangas, is set to begin operations by 2025.
Singson visited Cebu to meet with Cebu City barangay officials, Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, members of the local press, and other government officials. During his visit, he renewed his offer to provide e-jeepneys at significantly reduced prices to help marginalized drivers comply with the government’s Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP).
“I first offered my subsidy scheme for the acquisition of e-jeepneys to Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista as an option,” Singson said.
The e-jeepneys are designed to carry 28 passengers in air-conditioned comfort, promising a smoother commute for the public and increased income for drivers. These modern vehicles offer advancements in passenger capacity, comfort, and environmental impact while maintaining the iconic design elements integral to Filipino culture.
The first prototype e-jeepney, assembled in South Korea, is expected to arrive this month. Patterned after traditional public utility jeepneys but slightly taller and equipped with doors for added safety, the e-jeepney can seat 22 passengers with space for six standing.
Built at a cost of 2.2 million pesos ($44,000), Singson pledged to offer them at half the price—1.2 million pesos ($24,000)—through a rent-to-own repayment system without any down payment. “The drivers will just pay half of their daily earnings to their drivers’ group, which in turn remits to our company,” he explained.
Singson added: “I would only like to keep the iconic public utility jeepneys, although with modern touches, and not have them become eyesores or sources of pollution on the roads.”
The e-jeepney project marks a significant step in Singson’s vision for a more sustainable and efficient public transport network in the Philippines, aligning with national efforts to modernize transportation infrastructure.
