MANILA, PHILIPPINES – Typhoon Noul batters the southernmost tiny islands in Japan on Tuesday after leaving destruction and two fatalities in the Philippines, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The agency added that the powerful typhoon was spotted over Yakushima at middday Tuesday. Yakushima is about 1,600 kilometers southeast of Tokyo.

The typhoon was headed toward the main island of Honshu later in the day or early Wednesday and the agency has already issued warnings for heavy rainfall and powerful waves along the coastlines.

In the Philippines, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said 74-year-old Rogelio Paa and his 46-year-old son Neil died after being electrocuted while fixing their house in Aparri town early Sunday.

The NDRRMC said the typhoon damaged P15,507,200 worth of agricultural products and infrastructure in Ilocos Norte and Cagayan. At least 4,253 people were affected.

Meanwhile, another tropical storm is expected to enter the Philippine area of responsibility next week, PAGASA said.

The tropical storm, which has an international name “Dolphin”, will be renamed “Egay” when it enters the Philippines.

The storm is expected to follow the path of typhoon Dodong (Noul). – BusinessNewsAsia.com
